With JAMZAC 2020 set to take off on April 24th during ANZAC weekend, the organising committee met last night to discuss the implications of COVID-19 on the safe and successful running of the event, as well as the impact it will have on the wider community. We have therefore made the decision to postpone JAMZAC with the intent of running the event later in the year.
Although the attendance numbers would be less than the Ministry of Health’s current guidelines for the cancellation of mass gatherings/events, there are other factors that have had to be considered:
- The likelihood of increased restrictions being recommended as we move closer to the event date
- Possible sickness or isolation required of members of the organising committee and volunteers and their ability to guarantee delivery
- Possible sickness or isolation required by athletes already qualified or planning to take part and the impact that could have on participation numbers
- The possibility of transmission and impact on both our immediate and the wider community should any measures put in place be unsuccessful
Though disappointed by the decision, we look forward to the event post-virus and what it would mean for our community. Stay tuned for more information for those who have submitted style videos.
